We were devastated to learn of the passing in late August of Dr. Rob Sanders, a life-long animal advocate who served for many years as a member of the Carroll County Humane Society Board of Directors. Rob’s devotion to both animals and his students at UWG is legendary. The boy from Brooklyn made a real impact on this little corner of the South.
Rob particularly enjoyed volunteering at adoption events for shelter animals, where he was affectionately known as “the cat whisperer.” The man had a real gift for handling nervous or cranky kitties and was supremely talented at persuading people to adopt them. It was not unusual to see Rob reach into his own pocket to pay the adoption fee for a family that was truly interested in a cat but was hesitant about the cost.
Rob will be deeply missed by his former students and colleagues at UWG, where he taught for many years in the political science department. Students that he mentored throughout his career invariably highlight his deep intelligence, quick wit, and compassion when speaking of the impact he has had on their lives. We at CCHS join them in mourning the passing of a truly good man. All of us are better for having known him. Rest peacefully, Cat Whisperer.
